STEM

STEM Education at St Andrews Primary

St Andrew's Primary use a variety of both high and low tech resources so our students can develop skills in STEM.

What is STEM?

The acronym stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Students learn skills either in isolation or as integrated lessons as part of the curriculum. STEM helps students to think creatively and critically. Students develop rigour and resilience as well as communication skills.

The goal at SAPS is to have a low entry and a high ceiling for student achievement. For example: Students start off by learning blockly which is a visual based way to program. Blocks are dropped in place to write a program. By using Blockly our students learn about the logic of programming. Blockly mask javascript language which is written.

What are some of our STEM resources?

At SAPS we use a variety of high tech resources (high tech = digitally connected) these include robots which are coded such as:

Sphero and Ozobot. Engineering and coding with LEGO Wedo 2.0. Students also learn about being a software engineer by creating games from scratch using Bloxels. other engineering tasks include CAD design using Tinkercad and Sketchup, then using our 3D printers to print their designs.
