It was with great excitement that St Andrews Primary Marayong Year 6 students participated in the entry event of their current Project Based Learning unit.
Four volunteers from the Blacktown State Emergency Services (SES) unit gave generously of their time to explain their role in helping fellow Australians during times of crisis.
The event was inspiring, giving students the chance to meet real-life SES workers. But most exciting was the chance Year 6 had to meet ex-St Andrews Primary student and main SES presenter, Adrian Apalakis.
The students were amazed to meet someone from their school who was truly living a life in service to others in their community.
Armed with their driving question about how Australian citizens can support the SES, and a host of related questions, students learnt about SES Blacktown’s role in emergency situations such as floods, storms and tsunamis.
Through listening and learning about the challenging and rewarding role of an SES volunteer, students were empowered to apply this learning to the activities they will engage in during the remainder of the term.
St Andrews, Marayong, looks forward to welcoming Adrian and fellow SES Blacktown volunteers back at the end of Term 2, to showcase the findings of their PBL unit.

Our little Kindergarten scientists have been investigating how different materials are used for different purposes and how some materials are more durable than others. To put their learning into action, students took on the challenge of building homes for the Three Little Pigs using a variety of materials. They explored, tested, and compared which materials made the strongest and most durable houses. It was wonderful to see their creativity, problem-solving skills, and scientific thinking as they worked together to design and build their houses. Well done, Kindergarten scientists! 🌟🏠✨
