Our schools are cracking the reading code

Do you remember how you learned to read? For a vital skill that is linked to all other learning, it’s surprisingly difficult to explain how to go about learning it.

On Thursday, August 20, Year Three went on an excursion into the city. They visited the convict-built Hyde Park Barracks and St James' Church as well as Hyde Park and St Mary's Cathedral. The Barracks was the highlight of the day! Students got to wear 'slops', do some 'brick' laying, see artefacts, get an idea of what Sydney looked like in the 1800s and lie in a hammock.

Year 1 had a wonderful day at Featherdale Wildlife Park! As part of our Science unit on living things, we had the opportunity to see many Australian animals up close. The students enjoyed learning about the animals and observing them in their natural habitats. One of the highlights was getting up close to the animals and having a special photo taken with a koala. It was a fun and memorable learning experience for everyone!

12.08.26 | A Yarn with Uncle Ted St Andrews was grateful to welcome Uncle Ted from Jarara for a yarn with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Uncle Ted shared cultural tools and knowledge with the students, who also reflected on connections to Country, culture and community. Uncle Ted also shared traditional ways Aboriginal peoples have passed on knowledge across generations, including through storytelling, song, dance, music and art. We thank Uncle Ted and Jarara for sharing their time, knowledge and culture with our students.

Year 4 had a fantastic day of learning and fun! Students took part in a special AFL clinic, where they practised their skills, worked as a team and stayed active. Back in the classroom, students put their Maths skills to the test by creating their very own Area Robots using squares and rectangles and calculating the area of each part. A busy and exciting day of learning in Year 4! 👏📐🏉🤖

Six Habits That Help Children Develop a Love of Reading

Book Week is a celebration of stories, imagination and creativity, but helping children love reading isn't just something that happens during one week of the year. The good news? It doesn't take expensive resources or hours of extra time. Often, it's the small, everyday habits that make the biggest difference.
